BREAKING NEWS: Industry Recognition Before Launch
I'm absolutely thrilled to share incredible news that made my day. Chanticleer Reviews—whose Annual International Book Awards Program is considered the Oscars for authors, recognizing literary excellence across 26 different genres—has featured the Bella Brown Series as one of the best series they've reviewed in their prestigious Series Awards spotlight.
What makes this recognition even more extraordinary? The books haven't even officially launched yet. They're currently available for pre-order with launches scheduled for September and October 2025. This kind of industry validation before launch is incredibly rare. It speaks to the power of stories that truly connect with readers.
What Chanticleer Reviews said:
"J.W. Zarek's Bella Brown series captures the joy of childhood curiosity and the special bond between grandmother and granddaughter... The books excel at teaching through discovery rather than preaching. The series celebrates how patient guidance can transform daunting tasks into manageable, even enjoyable experiences."*
This recognition validates everything I believed about these stories - that children deserve authentic characters who feel big emotions, face real challenges, and discover they can handle whatever comes their way when someone believes in them.
Twelfth Picture Book Manuscript – Pip’s Epic Treasure Hunt
I finished revising my twelfth picture book manuscript, "Pip's Epic Treasure Hunt." I realized as I finished the final revision - every story I write now carries the same foundational message that appears in every dedication section of my children's books.
I am enough.
These three words aren't just a dedication. They're the cornerstone of everything I create.
Some children hear these words. Too many walk through life without anyone ever saying them. Worst of all, some are told the exact opposite.
That's why every picture book I write includes a dedication to the reader. The children who need to read, say, and think those words will find them on the page.
You know what's beautiful about August? It's the month when sensitive, curious, brave-hearted children prepare for new adventures.
Some feel nervous about starting school. Others worry about making friends. Many wonder if they'll be smart enough. Or funny enough. Or simply... enough.
That's why I switched from writing novels and non-fiction to picture books. I want to give back to the world something of value - a legacy that tells every child: "You are enough, exactly as you are."
With my January 1st, 2027 retirement date now secured, I have exactly 16 months to build the platform that will support my full-time mission: visiting schools, spreading this message, and combating America's literacy crisis one story at a time.
Because when children believe they are enough, they believe they can handle anything - including learning to love reading.
Happiness Hack #12: Embrace Transitions with Confidence
Happiness Hack #12: Embrace Transitions with Confidence
"Remember to be gentle with yourself and others. We are all children of chance, and none can say why some fields will blossom while others lay brown beneath the August sun." - Kent Nerburn
Figure - Butterfly Emerging from Cocoon
August is nature's masterclass in confident transitions. Here's what I've learned about navigating change - both from my own journey and from watching Bella Brown face her challenges:
- Name the feeling - It's okay to feel nervous about change
- Remember your support system - You have people who believe in you
- Focus on one small step - You don't have to solve everything at once
- Celebrate progress - Every step forward deserves recognition
- Trust your growth - You're not the same person you were last August
Daily practice: Each morning this month, when you look in the mirror, think and say aloud: "I am enough." Watch how this simple affirmation changes your approach to challenges.

Book Celebration: National Book Lovers Day & August Literary Giants
"Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August." - Jenny Han
MAJOR CELEBRATION: National Book Lovers Day - August 9th
National Book Lovers Day isn't just a celebration - it's a call to action. This day reminds us that reading isn't just academic; it's emotional, transformational, and absolutely essential for building confident, capable children.
August Literary Heroes Who Share Our Mission:
Virginia Lee Burton (August 30) understood that children need stories showing characters who persist through challenges with community support. Don Freeman (August 11) gave us "Corduroy," proving that being unique isn't a flaw - it's a superpower. Barbara Cooney (August 6) showed in "Miss Rumphius" how one person can make the world more beautiful.
These authors didn't write down to children - they wrote into their hearts, showing them they could handle whatever life offered.

MYTHOLOGY-MAKING NEWS: I've just completed "Pip's Epic Treasure Hunt," my twelfth picture book manuscript. This one breaks new ground by creating the first-ever domovoi children and nine distinct domovoi clans in literature, respectfully expanding ancient Slavic folklore.
Meet Pip, the "runt" who struggles to control his shapeshifting. He once turned into a dancing chicken for three days! Through spectacular failures and triumphant teamwork, Pip discovers that being different isn't a weakness - it's exactly what makes the team succeed.

Behind the Scenes: From Federal Service to Full-Time Author

The Divine Calling Continues:
Remember that divine calling from 2021 I had to write about book about butterflies for children that led to that zany cross-country research trip, which became the first two books in the eight-book Bella Brown series, transformed into my mission to help every sensitive, curious, brave-hearted child know - They are enough.
My Background Brings Unique Value:
· Evidence-based approaches from 20 years military service and 16 years federal adjudicative work.
· Professional credibility that opens doors with schools and institutions
· Systematic thinking about complex challenges like America's literacy crisis
The 2027 Transition Plan:
With over 36 years of combined service, by January 1st, 2027, I'll transition to full-time educational advocacy: author visits to schools across America.
I'll read my stories and show children how to boost their happiness level and raise their self-confidence instantly, as well as continue to create free comprehensive and one-topic focused lesson plans for teachers and educational professionals to access and download for free from my website.
The urgency is real: 65% of fourth graders read below proficiency level, and 54% of adults read below a sixth-grade level.
But here's what I know from my federal background - systemic problems require targeted solutions.
When children believe they are enough, they believe they can handle anything - including learning to love reading.
Why This Matters: America faces a literacy crisis, but it's not just about reading skills - it's about confidence. With reading scores at 30-year lows and 40% of children never developing a love of reading, we need stories that build self-worth first.
Children who believe in themselves create dreams they pursue, and will someday become our future leaders too..
So, to me, this is a national security crisis that can be addressed and resolved if we help get children involved in reading as early as possible and continue through they’re primary and secondary school years.
Then we've given our children and our future the chance they both deserve to succeed.
